Why use Quartz For Countertops?

 

Quartz is a non-porous manufactured composite that replicates the look of stone and is growing in popularity.  It is not the same as Quartzite. As a man-made material quartz rates a bit higher on the hardness scale and is slightly more resistant to damage.

The engineered quartz boasts of the best qualities of laminate and stone.  Quartz countertops began appearing in the United States just a few years ago after gaining popularity in Europe for the past decade.

This new engineered material is actually created through a process that mixes approximately 93% ground natural quartz with 7% of polymer resins.  The result is a super hard, low maintenance natural stone look which is available in a dazzling array of colors.

Quartz countertops resist even the toughest spills and will retain its luster for many years without the need for sealants or waxes.

The non-porous aspect of quartz allows superior protection against bacteria because it is harder for bacteria to develop and makes it easier to clean.

Quartz repels wine, coffee, oil, vinegar, and even food coloring without sealing!  Damaged quartz is trickier to repair and should always be done by a professional.

Quartz is highly stain resistant which makes it very easy to clean.  It does not need initial or continued sealing. It is just as strong as granite but has the added benefit of being more flexible.  There are very few flaws, if any, because the flaws have been engineered out during manufacturing.

Quartz can discolor over time when exposed to direct sunlight.  Quartz countertops are very durable but cannot be considered indestructible either.

 

Care and Cleaning of Quartz Countertops

Preserving the Beauty of Quartz –

 

  • Clean with a non-abrasive kitchen cleaner.  A vinegar and water solution or hot soapy water works best.
  • Use a clean rag, a soft cloth or microfiber cloth for best results.
  • Use a degreasing cleanser to clean off grease.  Rinse immediately after cleaning.
  • Use a glass or surface cleaner and a non-abrasive sponge (sponges used for non-stick pans) to clean up dried or heavy stains.
  • For deep cleaning, spray generous amounts of the surface cleaner over the countertop and let sit for approximately ten (10) minutes.  Wipe away with a non-scratch sponge.
  • Remove ink or permanent markers with an oil-based cleaner like Goo Gone.  Rinse with warm water immediately after the stain is removed.

 

Precautions – Basic Do’s and Don’ts –

 

  • DO use coasters under glasses, especially if they contain alcohol or citrus juices.
  • DO use trivets or mats under hot dishes or cookware.
  • DO us a cutting board – never chop or slice directly on the counter top.
  • DO use plain water and paper towels to wipe up liquids and spills as soon as possible.
  • DON’T use highly acidic or alkaline cleaners such as nail polish remover, turpentine, oven cleaner, bleach, drain cleaners, or dish washing agents.
  • DON’T use high PH cleaners.
  • DON’T use sealants, polish or wax.
